Beneficial owner

A beneficial owner is the natural person who ultimately owns or controls a company, regardless of whose name appears on formal documents. Financial regulations commonly define beneficial ownership at a 25% threshold, plus anyone exercising significant control over the entity.

In plain terms: The real human behind the company, however many layers sit in between.

Why it matters

The concept underlying both bank onboarding and beneficial ownership reporting regimes. Holding structures do not obscure it — they simply require you to document the chain up to the natural person.
