FDIC $250k. A $1bn Miami bank, being bought by Peru's Credicorp.
US routing number Debit card Credit card
A Miami bank whose borrowers mostly live abroad, with a representative office in Bogotá and no online application at all: a relationship manager opens the account, and expect a bank reference and source-of-funds papers. Keep $25,000 in checking or pay $100 a month. Free incoming wires, its own Visa credit cards, and an ownership change that may move any of this.
Who it turns away. Foreign nationals from sixty-odd countries, mostly Latin American, on a W-8BEN with a foreign address and no SSN or ITIN. Sanctioned countries are out, and the W-8BEN has to be renewed every three years or the account can be closed.
Fees, minimums and country lists compiled September 2026. Providers change all three without announcing it — treat every number here as the question you ask them, not the answer.
Five kinds of institution, two of which are banks
Most of the names on this page are not banks and do not claim to be, in a footnote you have never read. The difference does not matter until the day it is the only thing that matters.
Chartered bank
Holds a banking licence and takes your money as a deposit. It can lend that money out, and a national scheme — FDIC, FSCS, a European guarantee fund — stands behind an agreed amount of it if the bank fails.
The catch. Licences come with identity rules a foreigner is the hardest case for. Almost every chartered bank on this page wants either a local address, a local tax number or your physical presence.
Credit union
A member-owned bank. Same deposit-taking licence, same $250,000 of cover — from the NCUA rather than the FDIC — and usually lower fees, a share-secured loan for building credit and a card that reports to the bureaus.
The catch. You have to qualify to join, and almost all of them verify a Social Security number and a US address at the door. Only Alliant and PenFed publish a route for someone living abroad, and both still want an ITIN. The rest are on this list so you know what “anyone can join” actually means.
Fintech / EMI
Not a bank. It holds your money at a bank, in a pooled account kept separate from its own funds, under an e-money or money-transmitter licence. That is what “safeguarded” means, and it is why these open in a day.
The catch. If the fintech fails you are a creditor in an administration, not a depositor with a claim on an insurance fund. Recovery is likely and slow — think months, and think about which invoices come due in them.
Broker
A regulated investment account that happens to hold cash in twenty currencies. SIPC or its European equivalent protects the assets, cash included, up to a limit — and the FX pricing beats every bank on this page.
The catch. No routing number that accepts a direct debit, and usually no card. A broker is where money rests, never where a business receives and pays.
Offshore bank
A bank in a small jurisdiction that has built its business on non-resident clients. It expects your passport to be foreign, your company to be foreign and your documents to arrive certified by post.
The catch. Almost none of these jurisdictions has deposit insurance, and their access to US dollar clearing runs through a correspondent bank that can withdraw it. That is the risk you are actually taking, not tax.
Six things that decide this, none of which are a fee
Almost every rejected application in this category was made by someone who compared monthly costs and stopped there.
01The EIN comes before everything
No US provider will look at a company without one, and a non-resident without an SSN cannot get an EIN online. That is a fax or mail application to the IRS and four to eight weeks, so start it the day the company is formed rather than the day you need the account.
02A registered agent address is not an address
Mercury, Relay and every US fintech now ask for a principal business address and check it against the known agent and mail-forwarding addresses. Using the one on your formation documents is the single most common reason a clean application is declined.
03Insured does not mean what it says
“FDIC insured up to $5m” on a fintech means your money is swept into partner banks and covered there, if the records reconcile. It is a real protection with an extra step in it, and that step failed publicly when Synapse collapsed in 2024 and left customers waiting on their own balances.
04You will be de-risked eventually
Accounts get closed with thirty days' notice and no reason given, and it happens most to exactly the profile reading this page. Two accounts at two unrelated providers is not paranoia, it is the minimum viable setup.
05Every one of these reports on you
FATCA and CRS mean the account tells your tax authority it exists. Offshore has not meant hidden since about 2016 — what these jurisdictions still offer is a balance outside your home banking system, which is a different and much smaller benefit.
06Your customers' rails decide this, not the fees
If US clients pay you by ACH you need a real US routing number, and a Wise USD balance will not do it. If you sell into Europe you need a SEPA IBAN in the company's name. Pick for how money arrives, then argue about the FX spread.
One account is not a banking setup
The failure mode in this category is not choosing the wrong provider. It is choosing one provider, running the whole company through it for two years, and then reading a closure notice on a Friday with payroll due on Monday. Nothing on this page prevents that. A second account at an unrelated institution does.
What a working setup looks like
Four accounts doing four different jobs. Most founders reading this have one account doing all four, which works until it does not.
01The operating account
Where customers pay and vendors get paid, on the rails your customers actually use. For a US LLC with US clients that means a real routing number: Mercury or Relay if they will have you, a Miami bank branch if they will not.
02The backup, opened the same week
At an unrelated provider on a different licence, funded with enough to run a month. You will not want to open it while everything is working, which is precisely why you have to.
03The multi-currency layer
Wise or Airwallex for collecting in currencies your primary account cannot hold, and for converting at a spread instead of a bank's markup. Treat it as a pipe, not a vault.
04Where the balance actually sleeps
A brokerage or a licensed bank with a real guarantee behind it, holding anything you are not spending this quarter. Interactive Brokers and Swissquote both open remotely and both cover cash under an actual scheme.
The LLC, the EIN, the operating agreement and an address that will not fail a bank’s address check — then an introduction to the providers on this list that work with non-resident founders. We do not open the account for you; nobody honest can.
This is general information, not financial, banking or legal advice, and Founders 8 is not a bank and does not hold client money. The 99 providers listed here — 69 available to an individual and 74 to a company — were compiled in September 2026 from published terms and current applicant reports. Minimums, monthly fees, eligible countries and appetite for non-resident business change constantly and often without announcement, and inclusion here is not a recommendation or an endorsement. Verify every figure with the provider before you apply, and read what protects your balance before you fund it.
